Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego

Ushuaia is the southernmost city of our planet. There are only two very small settlements which are located closer to South Pole than Ushuaia. It is also the port which is closest to the Antarctica.

When researching for your visit to Argentina, you will often see prices in $. Don’t worry, prices in Argentina are not as high, they are not prices in US$ but in Argentinian Peso which also uses the $ symbol.

Things to do in Ushuaia include a day cruise to the Faro Les Éclaireurs (lighthouse), an islet shared between the lighthouse and penguin-like birds, Laguna Esmeralda and its penguins, Historia Fueguina museum and Museo del Fin del Mundo. Don’t forget to also ride the Tren del Fin del Mundo — if possible on the first class, it’s a highlight (separate post coming).

If you plan a cruise to the Antarctica Peninsula, it is worth to go to Ushuaia and look for some last minute offers. Cruises priced at US$ 5,000 or more, are being offered at US$ 500–1,000.

Where to stay: stay as close to Av. San Martín as possible. It is the main road, going through the heart of the city, parallelly to the promenade and almost everything is located there. Anywhere else could be very steep uphills, something I don’t like at all.

Where to eat: I wasn’t disappointed having lunch at Volver. A great small restaurant with delicious seafood and local atmosphere. No tourists like for example me or you.

Mediterranean mood? Every now and then, this canny waiter will put on some greek music for his customers at Quinquela Café Bar & Pizzas.
